The Maras – Moray – Salineras + Ollantaytambo tour allows you to visit Chinchero, Moray, and the Salt Mines, ending in Ollantaytambo, where you can take the train to Machu Picchu. Chinchero is located 28 km north of Cusco. It was the retirement palace of the tenth Inca emperor, Tupac Inca Yupanqui, and currently houses a beautiful colonial church. Moray was an agricultural laboratory for the adaptation and improvement of seeds used for food. The Salineras are formed by shallow pools where salt is evaporated and obtained. Ollantaytambo is an Inca village, still inhabited, strategically located as the unavoidable entrance to Machu Picchu.
CHINCHERO:
The archaeological complex of Chinchero was the retirement palace of the tenth Inca emperor, Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The site is surrounded by ornamental terraces, highlighting its large ceremonial plaza and various remains of Inca dwellings and shrines. Above the Inca construction of Chinchero, you can see a beautiful colonial church, built in accordance with the legislation for the extirpation of idolatry, which ordered the destruction of Inca temples for evangelical purposes. You can also visit and shop for handicrafts at the Chinchero Textile Factory, where they display the entire process of dyeing natural plants, plucking alpaca wool, and ancient weaving as it was made in Inca times.
MORAY:
In the Moray archaeological complex, we can see circular terraces, like circular rings, ranging from large to small. Within the Moray terraces, the different climatic variations are evident; the greater the depth, the higher the temperature. These climatic conditions were exploited by Inca agronomists and scientists to introduce new species of wild plants, study them, adapt them, and even crossbreed them with other species.
SALT MINES:
The Salt Works are part of a natural geological formation consisting of a spring that emanates salt water, which is distributed through small channels into more than 4,000 shallow pools. Through the evaporation of the salt water, salt crystals of different varieties and qualities are obtained. The most characteristic of the Salt Works is the pink salt, known for its therapeutic uses and health benefits for human consumption.
OLLAMTAYTAMBO:
The town of Ollantaytambo is located at the confluence of two rivers (the Vilcanota River and the Patacancha River), at a point where the valley is narrowest. Walls were built there that cut across the valley. This facilitated the control of entry and exit from Machu Picchu. At the top of its walls, on a rocky mountain, we can see the religious site called the Temple of the Sun. Its construction stands out for its gigantic walls made of hewn stones from over 7 km away.
The urban area of Ollantaytambo is the only Inca ruin inhabited by 21st-century citizens. Its streets maintain the same urban layout as the 15th century, with aqueducts distributed throughout the town. Most of its homes have an Inca design, with carved stone bases, adobe walls, and a colonial tiled roof.
